Pascagoula is called the Singing River city and is situated on the Gulf of Mexico and has a deep and rich historical background founded as an European settlement that goes back more than 300 years. The Pascagoula River is without a doubt the centrepiece of the biggest unimpeded river system in the entire lower 48 States. The river is a legend in the tradition of the entire South as the Singing River of the Mississippi Gulf Coastline.
Pascagoula is the Jackson County seat. Based on the United States 2010 census, the populace of Pascagoula was 22,392. See my site for more info.
The name was assumed from a tribe of very peaceful Native Americans. Pascagoula means bread eaters and these Native Americans lived in this region when Hernando De Soto initially made connection with them in the 1540s. Sadly, this noble group of Native Americans are now extinct. The whole tribe drowned themselves while chanting while they waded hand by hand into deep river waters instead of enslave themselves with their enemy, the fierce Viloxi Tribe. As a result, the legend of the Singing River was created. Countless people have reported that on still summer time and fall evenings, the sorrowful melody of the Pascagoulas humming can be heard close to the river.
For many hundreds of years, visitors and residents as well have described a strange humming sound that springs up from the waters of the river. Even though theories are readily available, nobody has identified the unusual occurrence. The sound made by the rubbing of the rim of a crystal glass is comparable to the recurring humming or singing which can be heard near the river.
This band of Native Americans was followed by the Spanish, French and English settlers.
